Structural editing

The editorial report for a structural edit will provide recommendations on how to strengthen your structure and optimize your organization. For fiction, this will include feedback on plot, character, scene arrangement, point of view and dialogue, among other things. For non-fiction, the suggestions will hone in ways to improve the flow and focus, whether through rewriting, reorganizing, or refining.

Manuscript Evaluation

After closely reading your manuscript, I’ll provide an editorial report (2000–5000 words) with recommendations for how to best align your work with your vision. This will include highlighting the strengths to emphasize, the problems to address, and the steps to do both.

Copy editing

Copy editing focuses on grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage. I’ll check for consistency and continuity of mechanics and facts. Depending on the needs of the text, it may include editing tables, figures, and lists; creating or following a style guide; and correcting or querying general information for accuracy and consistency.

Stylistic Editing

Style is extremely personal. Stylistic editing makes that personal style more clear and coherent, refining language to better establish and maintain tone and mood at the sentence and paragraph level. It’s also about making sure that the language used is suitable for the audience, and that the structure of that language serves the reader in addition to serving the narrative of the work.

I mainly work with arts organizations and not-for-profits, where I have helped them meet their funding goals with both government and private grants (successful proposals include the Community Gaming Grant).

For an estimate of the cost of your project, please provide the following information:

  • The length of the project (word-count, not page count)

  • The deadline for returning the work

  • The kind of editing you need

  • Any specific concerns or areas you want me to focus on when doing the edits

  • A short sample (5–10 pages) of the work. For non-fiction structural edits, I would also like to see the table of contents
