about Brittany Vesterback
My professional history is full of books. I received a BA in World Literature and studied in the Master of Publishing program at Simon Fraser University. After I left school, I worked in marketing for one small press and ebook production for another, ad sales and promotions for a newspaper, and fulfillment for a quilting company. But the greatest breadth of my work experience came from working in and eventually managing a local indie bookstore. Books and the people who love them have always been my passion.
I had been curious about indexing for years but it wasn’t until the Covid-19 pandemic that I found an opportunity to learn more about it through SFU’s indexing course. After completing the course, I took part in the Indexing Society of Canada’s Mary Newberry Mentorship Program where I was mentored by ISC co-president Jolanta Komornicka. I’ve found that indexing lets me engage with books deeply, while still thinking of and serving the reader.
I have training in indexing, copy editing, and structural editing, in addition to the broader publishing experience I received through the publishing program and my work with small presses. In my free time, I read a lot of speculative fiction and play a lot of video games. I’m two years into a Dungeons & Dragons campaign with four other women in lit, where I act as the Game Master. We also regularly run one-shots in different game systems. I also participate in community theatre as often as I can manage, usually have at least one craft project in progress, and dabble in gardening. Previous projects have included wood-burning dice boxes for my TTRPG party members and sewing a 1950s-inspired evening gown.
I am always excited to learn something new.
