what I do
I provide professional indexing and editing services for academic and trade nonfiction, and fiction with a focus on science fiction, fantasy, and other speculative genres.
For indexing, I read your book from cover to cover and create an index to help your readers better navigate it. I put up signposts and collect important references so that new readers know what they’re going to find and re-readers can find that one passage they most desperately need–even if the only word they remember is “javelin.”
For editing, I can help you clarify your language, establish your tone, or re-organize your argument–or, if the occasional calls for it, all three. I’m especially interested in troubleshooting magic systems, worldbuilding for port cities, and what happened to that cousin in the family tree who mysteriously disappeared.
My Services
-
Back-of-Book Index
Clean, classic, exactly what it says on the tin. In traditional publishing, the index goes at the back of the book, and is prepared using final page proofs of the manuscript. On average, between $3–7 per 300 words.
-
Embedded Index
An index that is coded to a Word or InDesign file and can change with the text. Embedded indexes take a little bit longer on average and tend to fall in the $4–7 range per 300 words.
-
Editing Services
After reading your manuscript, I’ll provide an editorial report (2000–5000 words) with recommendations for the best ways to make your work align with your vision.
